MUMISOC, or the Museum of Migration in Soconusco (the name given to the southwest corner of the Mexican state of Chiapas, along the border with Guatemala), was created at Migrahack as a digital space meant to invite stories about the region, and educate the public about the importance and history of migration in this region.
Since the 19th century, Soconusco has been a major entry point for both people and merchandise into Mexico. For that reason, it has become a place that migrants from throughout Central America have made home. And these migrants continue to arrive and settle here, as is shown in this interactive digital gallery.
“We want to create consciousness through our collective memory of this place,” say MUMISOC’s team members. “We’d like to invite people to think about the dangers of indifference towards migrants, the dangers of discrimination, and forgetting.”
